Hey everybody, thanks to my good buddy Wyatt I’ve been nominated for “Firefighting Blog of the Year”. I know my posting has been spotty lately but I think the contest has brought me back to life. In any event, if you like First In I’d be honored to have your vote. This contest is for best firefighting blog. While First In is first and foremost a blog about my life as a Philly firefighter, I believe even the most ardent fan would get sick of the same thing post after post. So I add other topics like politics, music, crime and life in this big city in general into the mix. I think it makes for a better read and a better blog.
In this competition I’m up against some heavyweights. Some of my competitors run ads and are well-known throughout the fire service. I think there’s a big difference in content and philosophy. I don’t do ads so I can say how I feel without having to worry about offending those paying the bills. I’m hoping I have more crossover appeal with people coming to First In not strictly to read about firefighting. So if you could, kindly spread the word to vote for First In. Any linkage, Tweeting or Facebook cross posting would be greatly appreciated. As always, thanks so much for taking the time to stop by.

Thanks, and stay safe- CaptainAmerica
If I was Mitt Romney I’d run this clip on a big screen before every speech I give. That’s what I’m saying.
Twenty years ago today I made a decision that changed my life forever. Lucky for me it was a change for the better. Today the Oberfrau and I celebrate our twentieth wedding anniversary. In typical fashion for us it’s a low-key event. Since the kids were in school we got to do one of our favorite things… (not that, silly). We slept in. Then we went to breakfast and shopped for a new TV (ours is on life support). Tonight we may celebrate a little more, but we are both just glad for the weekend off and to be able to spend family time together with the kids.
When we started out we had nothing. In fact my decision to get married was at the time probably one of the most irresponsible things I ever did. No job, nowhere to live, few prospects that things were going to improve in a hurry. I had been rejected by the fire department due to a hearing disability and was involved in a bitter battle to get hired, a battle that I was losing through attrition. I did have one thing going for me: I had a plan that I was determined to follow and I had A’s support to see it through. With her Visa about to expire I had no wiggle room. SO against all advice we decided (after MUCH emotional trauma) to run away and get married.
We met when I was stationed in Germany with the 8th Infantry Division. After my discharge, A followed me two years later after completing her schooling. Like every marriage, ours has been a rollercoaster ride, filled with the ups and downs that life’s journey provides. Looking back we have done remarkably well and are thankful everyday for it. We have two beautiful, healthy children, we both have jobs, our bills get paid and we have our health. I thank God everyday for making that decision and following my heart that cloudy day twenty years ago. I am as much in love today as I was back then. I look forward to another twenty years with my soul mate. Happy Anniversary, A.
Love, D. 🙂
Ok while I grew up with video games, I have never been more than a casual player. That may all have changed. In short I’m addicted to a game seemingly tailor-made to cause me an addiction: World Of Tanks. As a former Army Tank crewman and fan of all things military this game has sucked me in to its vortex and I may not be able to escape. It’s pretty much everything I love in a video game: Tanks, tanks and more tanks. You play online against other teams of tanks in a multitude of settings. Cities, desert, arctic and so on. The graphics are awesome and you can build and customize your equipment and crew as you go along. The only drawback is you have to use your keyboard and not a controller. Hopefully they will resolve that in the future as the game expands. Like I said I’ve needed a distraction lately and I think I found it. NOTE: If you join (it’s free) and you see a tank titled CaptainDEN you better be quick if you’re not on my team. No prisoners!
Sources are saying Chelsea Clinton’s “brilliant” career as a newswoman may be over. Probably because so few newsbabes look like Secretariat.
Chelsea Clinton’s much-trumpeted deal with NBC seems to be nearly done.
NBC News president Steve Capus said Chelsea would work on its “Making a Difference” series on “Rock Center” and “Nightly News.” Capus told the Times, “We both want to see how this goes. But I hope it’s the beginning of a nice, long-term relationship.” He didn’t mention at the time it was for 90 days.
A Clinton rep added, “Chelsea is at the beginning of her contract, and when she gets closer to the end, discussions will begin about whether or not to renew. In the meantime she is very much enjoying her time there and looking forward to her next piece airing.” (LINK)
With a statement like that, she’s probably toast. And for good reason – she stank.
She called idiot actor Sean Penn a “communist assh*le” at LA airport the other day. AWESOME! I guess when Hollywood libtards occasionally re-enter the real world they are vulnerable to be confronted by reality. In this case Maria Conchita- Alonzo calls out Penn for his support of communist dictator and all around assbag Hugo Chavez. As someone who comes from a communist country (Cuba) Miss Alonzo doesn’t take too kindly to those who support the ideology that oppresses and murders their fellow countrymen. Especially privileged American liberals!
Ok since I’ve been good this year I hope Santa will take my request for the TRON cycle seriously. Very seriously! H/T to Howie via F/B.
There has never been a cooler TV car. The original Batmobile started life as a one-of a-kind Ford concept car and ended up as an icon of television history. I grew up watching the re-runs of the original Batman TV show. I remember even as a kid thinking that cars just don’t get much more awesome. I was right. Batman may not have been the BEST superhero, but he had the most wicked ride. You can read about the history of this bad ass street machine HERE!
