ROUND AND ROUND

The Nutter administrations public safety policies – up in smoke.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter and US senator Bob Casey (D-Pa.) today were calling on Congress to fund programs that allow local fire departments to train and hire firefighters. Speaking at a news conference at 30th Street Station, Casey called for the reauthorization of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (“SAFER”) grant. “We want to make sure that we have as many firefighters on the job, able to fight fires, as possible,” he said today.

The SAFER grant would allow Philadelphia to hire 160 firefighters.  Diane Neary, whose firefighter husband Robert was killed in last month’s Kensington warehouse fire (see related story), pleaded for an end to the rolling closures of Philadelphia fire stations known as “brownouts” (see related stories). “You need to follow and make sure these funds are not delegated for anything other than to stop these brownouts, to support our firemen,” Neary said.

But Philadelphia fire commissioner Lloyd Ayers wouldn’t promise that receiving the SAFER grant would mean an end to brownouts. “We have a task force that’s working on those very things,” he said today.  “What will it look like?  Will we be continuing the brownouts or not?  So that’s still being studied.” Casey said he sent a letter to the FEMA administrator asking that Philadelphia be included in any SAFER grants. How’s this for irony; Mayor Nutter wants the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to pay for what is essentially a LOCAL GOVERNMENT responsibility: emergency services. Doesn’t this beg questions such as, Why can’t Philadelphia fund it’s OWN public safety departments? The Nutter administration seems to have lots of money to fund other non-essential bullshit. Where are the tax dollars that are supposed to be paying for ESSENTIAL SERVICES going? Or, Why do we even need a LOCAL government if Washington D.C. is going to finance everything that goes on in our city? Surely Washington will want to have a say in how things are run if they are paying for it. Or, How about the prudence of the Nutter administration’s brownout policy in the first place? They claim the brownouts are due to financial problems (of their own making), but yet turn down funding to end them at every turn. Sounds like they just don’t want to fund the fire department so they can waste the money on other social welfare bullshit. Round and round.

Dude I hesitated to go there especially since they brought Lt Neary’s wife out there. How do ou tell a grieving widow she is being used by tools?

    • Well they didn’t get what they wanted. She spoke very well and laid it all out. Can’t always predict what the news prints. KYW had the radio version and it was pretty good.

    Cap:
Cripes, if the city needs funding…why not STOP cease and desist ALL of the do-nothing “freebie” programs the city currently funds for the low-life lazy-asses both in City hall as well as in all the damn HUD houses on the damn streets?

They’d be rolling in MORE dough than Amoroso!!
    (just a thiought)

    Stay safe out there.

I’ve got a better idea, just fire the whole damn administration and let DC run it… 🙂

Keep the faith Cap…I don’t live in Philly but sleep better at night knowing that men like you man the walls of public safety – despite the malfeasance of our political “betters”.
