Audi of America President didn’t bother mincing words on his opinions on electric cars and plug-in hybrids during a recent interview with MSN Autos. He went particularly hard on the Chevrolet Volt, which he called “a car for idiots.” He then added, “No one is going to pay a $15,000 premium for a car that competes with a (Toyota) Corolla.
So there are not enough idiots who will buy it.” The Volt, you’ll recall, is expected to cost around $40,000 once tax credits are applied. De Nysschen also laid into full-on electric vehicles: “They’re for the intellectual elite who want to show what enlightened souls they are.” LINK
The latest installment of “Eco-Wars” finds the Obama administration and their “environmentalist wacko” allies embroiled in yet another green fraud. This time it’s the Chevy Volt. A cornerstone of Obama’s auto industry takeover, the Volt is a terrible car that no one wants. Sales are dismal and the best customer so far has turned out to be (are you ready?) the federal government. Duh.
The Volt and other electric hybrids are supposed to be the answer to our nations future transportation needs. Instead they rely on unproven and apparently unsafe battery technology. The Volt in particular is horribly overpriced and performs poorly compared to conventional gasoline powered cars.
Now we all know the President isn’t a real car executive (although he plays one on TV). But the President of Audi of America is. Anyone who knows anything about cars knows that Audi’s are some of the best made cars on the planet. So when he predicts the Volt will be a failure that will ultimately have to be bailed out yet again by the American tax payer we should take notice. He’s right on the money (NPI) when he criticises the Volt as a “car for idiots” because spending $40,000.00 on a car that only gets 40 miles on a charge, is limited by extremes of weather and still needs a gas-powered motor is quite frankly… idiotic.
The Volt isn’t a car for the masses like the Volkswagen of legend. It’s a car for environmental elites as Mr. De Nysschen pointed out. Average Joe’s aren’t in the market for this vehicle. So that leaves me asking who is? Like I said before judging by the absence of solar panels mounted on roofs anywhere I go there is no consumer demand for this technology. The Obama administrations efforts to force “green” technology on a public that clearly doesn’t want it has failed miserably as the Solyndra scandal clearly shows.
Curly lightbulbs, solar panels, hybrid cars. Instead of letting the market dictate technology, the left is forcing it on us to the tune of billions of wasted tax dollars. That sure is change we can believe in…
