Not any more thanks to Obama and the EPA!

Remember how Obama recently waived new ozone regulations at the EPA because they were too costly? Well, it seems that the Obama administration would rather make people with Asthma cough up money than let them make a surely inconsequential contribution to depleting the ozone layer:

Asthma patients who rely on over-the-counter inhalers will need to switch to prescription-only alternatives as part of the federal government’s latest attempt to protect the Earth’s atmosphere. The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday patients who use the epinephrine inhalers to treat mild asthma will need to switch by Dec. 31 to other types that do not contain chlorofluorocarbons, an aerosol substance once found in a variety of spray products.

The action is part of an agreement signed by the U.S. and other nations to stop using substances that deplete the ozone layer, a region in the atmosphere that helps block harmful ultraviolet rays from the Sun. But the switch to a greener inhaler will cost consumers more. Epinephrine inhalers are available via online retailers for around $20, whereas the alternatives, which contain the drug albuterol, range from $30 to $60. LINK

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE SH*TTING ME! It’s official. The Obama administration has proved once and for all that like the most radical, left-wing, environmental wacko’s, they care more about the planet than the humans that actually live on it. They also proved once again that they don’t care about LOWERING the cost or IMPROVING the quality of health care. All they care about is controlling the American people from cradle to grave.

It’s pretty frightening anymore. I am firmly in the camp with those who believe that the federal government is actually the ENEMY of the American people. It’s probably time for the states to get together and dissolve it then re-constitute it in a less powerful fashion before it’s too late. The feds have become like the BORG of Star Trek fame.

This story INFURIATES me for a couple of reasons. Number one- the girl suffered from asthmatic symptoms when she was a tike. She spent a week in the hospital once because of respiratory problems that luckily she has largely outgrown. There is no more powerless feeling than to stand there watching your kid gasping for air in a hospital bed and not be able to do anything about it.

We were fortunate that the doctors prescribed a home nebulizer that we could use to give her periodic breathing treatments. Other times she used an inhaler, like the kind soon to be outlawed by the insanity of the Obama administrations FDA. I view this ruling as a personal attack on my family’s health by an out of control government.

One of our top ten calls at work is easily for “breathing difficulty”. I remember a particular young girl who was having a severe asthma attack at school one morning. She was gasping dramatically when we arrived. We got her to calm down and put her on oxygen. We asked the school nurse if she had medicine (an inhaler) and she told us it ran out. The girl was suffocating before our eyes. I was able to get a medic unit to divert to us and the medics immediately started her on breathing treatments. They rushed her to the hospital where luckily she recovered. Luckily.

The simple fact that she ran out of her little inhaler almost cost that girl her life. When she felt wheezy a little puff was usually enough to take care of the symptoms, like millions of other people. Now Americans will have to rely on pills or very expensive replacement inhalers. (Does anyone smell a drug company payoff here?) Even more insidious is that children like that little girl will be tremendously impacted by this lunacy. One of the easiest childhood afflictions for kids to control is Asthma. It is extremely simple for most kids to learn how to use an inhaler in just a few minutes and very convenient for them to keep one on their person.

This is quite frankly immoral and disgusting. These latest rulings from an un-elected bureaucracy (the FDA) WILL lead to deaths there is no doubt in my professional mind. People will not be able to afford these more expensive inhalers, will ration their use and get a lot sicker for NO REASON except to placate liberals and their eco-green, global warming fantasies. Mother Earth is now more important that your REAL mother.

This is something EVERYONE should be calling Congress over. It’s an absolute outrage!

  1. Wyatt Earp says:

Not only will the new inhalers cost more, they are less effective than the old ones. I’ve used both, and the new ones simply don’t work as well. My asthma isn’t severe, but when I have an issue, I want quick action – not some crap that doesn’t fix the problem.

  2. Kenneth E. MacAlister Jr. says:

Captain, as someone in the HVAC & refrigeration industry I know the bunk about CFCs depleting the ozone layer all too well. The entire loony left wing environmental movement is all about worshipping the creation instead of God, The Creator. I do not believe God would give humans the ability to permanently destroy His creation & God Himself is still in control no matter what the loony left says. While the CFC regulations don’t harm people in my industry people will be harmed by this lunacy. Actually I retract the first part of that last statement. Many of the newer non-CFC refrigerants & synthetic refrigeration oils are known to be cancer causing, whereas the old CFC based refrigerants & mineral oils were not. But as we all know “saving the planet” is paramount to the loony left, no matter who it hurts. This isn’t just Obama. This is the whole loony left in action. Just think of all the lives lost in Africa after the left got DDT banned. “Gotta save those disease carrying mosquitoes! & we all know DDT depletes the ozone layer!” The only effective answer to the madness of the loony left is for all Americans to put God first above ALL other things. God is the single major factor in the left not being able to turn the entire world into a communist “paradise” like Cuba who they believe the U.S.A. should be modeled after. The thing that really kills me though is the left expends so much energy to “save the planet”, a planet which God Himself will do away with as His plans unfold at the end of time. Trust God. He has all the answers. Try as the hard as they may the loony left will never diminish or stop the greatness of God & His plans for this planet going forward.

    • Ken- I actually graduated HVAC school back in the day. Never worked in the field but I remember when the “new” rules about CFC’s and recovering them were coming into play.
As usual it is the lunatic left and their environmental insanity that puts human life below the planet.
They fail to accept that eventually the Sun will become a Red Giant and the Earth will most likely be destroyed then. (In about 7 billion more years). These people are sick.

  3. You did read that the decision was made back in 2008, right?

    • IMPLEMENTATION is the key here not when some unelected bureaucrat decided on something. It is the current administration that is letting this go forward, not the previous one. This along with a myriad of other equally insane bureaucratic regulations and mandates that are taking away the rights of average Americans.

  4. “I do not believe God would give humans the ability to permanently destroy His creation ”

So who lets people murder (or destroy) others: the tooth fairy?

  5. momhoppes says:

“Breathing Difficulties” is only topped by “Lift Assists” in our region. COPD is as common as cedar trees here. This is the poorest county in the state and decisions like this will just make things worse. It looks like it’s time to campaign for more O2 bottles. Those who can, stock up on asthma medicine while you can.

  6. Bob G. says:

I used to work in HVAC (back in the 1980s) and that was before the “recovery” crap…never made any sense to me.

They (the gov’t) said that CFCs harmed the ozone alyer.,..got it.

Only thing is…CFCs are HEAVIER THAN AIR…!
So WHO is transporting all that stuff up into our ionosphere, anyway, hmm?

No one could seem to answer that one.
Ken is right about mineral oil-based lubes and refrigerants (R/12 & R/22) versus the “synth” versions, too.
    Carcinogenic is the new wave.
The worst you could do in the old days was create some phosgene gas…and we tried NEVER to do that.

Now, what did the main character in V For Vendetta once say?
“People should not be afraid of their government…the government should be afraid of it’s people”.

    (yeah, that was it)

    Good post and comments.

    Roll safe out there.

  7. momhoppes says:

Randal – What if there is no recycling place? What about the heat they don’t put off but is still needed for chick houses or grow houses? What if you break a box of them? Who gets to clean up the mercury?

I don’t care if people use CFLs. I do care when the choice has been taken away from me. I still use (and need to use) “regular” light bulbs for a variety of things. CFLs are not sufficient for chicks. They don’t give off enough heat. I also need the heat for early spring planting to get my seeds started if I want to eat the next winter.

And yes, I know all about energy usage. I provide my own electricity so I am not straining anyone else’s grid but my own with my scary light bulbs.

If I want actual light to read or see inside my home after the sun goes down, I have oil lamps.

Quit telling me what bulbs I have to buy, show me my choices and let me be the one to decide what is best for me and my family. Keep your mercury and your legislation to yourself.

    /off soapbox

    • So you’re all in favor of leaded gas and washing your hands with benzene too, correct?

You’re describing the 0.001% of light bulb uses; the other 99.999% of the uses for CFLs could (and should) switch.

  8. Ingineer66 says:

Here in Cali CFL’s were mandated for new construction. So now my 3 year old house has a bunch of plug in CFLs that are not very bright, take a while to warm up so they give off usable light, contain mercury and don’t last anywhere near the 3 to 10 years advertised. I the first 2 years I replaced 5 burned out CFL bulbs. Now LED lights that are instantly bright are out and they use about half the energy that a CFL uses, but I cannot buy them because they only fit screw bases for retrofit and I have damn plug in CFLs. If the politicians would get out of the way like most things and let the market work, things would be better and I would have better lighting in my house and use less electricity.

    • Randal Graves says:

The LED solution will eventually be a good one, but not until the price of a standard LED floodlight drop below $35.

  9. And THAT is the whole point. Americans aren’t stupid. If you build a better mousetrap the world will beat a path to your door. If you FORCE a mousetrap on people that they don’t want, didn’t ask for and doesn’t work very well they will resist it at every turn.

The lightbulb manufacturers in America are now being closed down in favor of Chinese factories because Mercury is a deadly toxin. The workers there suffer from Mercury poisoning. With our environmental laws and workers rights you couldn’t afford to make those “cost efficient” bulbs here so they AREN’T better economically or practically. Your trading a minor issue for a major problem.

Environmentalists have no compunction killing foreigne workers in order to achieve their Utopian dream of a “green” world. Recycling MERCURY is a big deal just wait until those regulations come down. You can’t use a little Asthma inhaler but lightbulbs filled with Mercury? No problem. More environmental bullshit.
