PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The investigation continues into an apartment fire Tuesday morning in Philadelphia’s Lawncrest neighborhood that claimed two lives and injured a third person. The one-alarm fire was discovered in a first-floor apartment unit of a five-story apartment building in the 6400 block of Oxford Avenue near Levick Street.
It was called in about 9 a.m. and brought under control in less than 30 minutes. Two people — a 56-year-old woman and a 76-year-old man — were pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. Another man suffered smoke inhalation and was listed in critical condition.
I think we can now see very clearly the effect of Mayor Nutter’s catastrophic fire department cut backs. While his regime is able to come up with HALF A MILLION DOLLARS for a statue, his administration has continued the policy of rolling fire company brownouts on top of closing seven other fire companies. While other agencies (like PHA) waste MILLIONS of taxpayer dollars, the fire department is steadily being de-funded. Very bright policy for such a dangerous world, don’t you think?
Our fire death toll right now is DOUBLE what it was this time last year. The department is stretched to the breaking point and when any organization is put into that position, things break down. Training is virtually non-existent. Morale is non-existent as a recent department survey clearly stated. Run totals go up, cover-ups go up, fatigue goes up, equipment breaks down and isn’t replaced and the threats of discipline are ever-present.
The bodies are piling up and the news media refuses to confront the Mayor about his policies. Women, children and the disabled. Instead they carry his water and ignore any story that will paint his policies in a bad light. It is typical and offensive and irresponsible. How is a firefighter supposed to do more with less? Can someone explain to me how that is done? On top of it, firefighters are still disparaged by both the administration and the media even though we continue to show up for work every shift even though our contract expired more than a year ago. Who are the real greedy pigs?
