WASHINGTON – After wrapping her arms around the retail giant Wal-Mart and trying to cajole foodmakers into producing nutrition labels that are easier to understand, Michelle Obama has her sights set on a new target: the nation’s restaurants.
A team of advisers to the First Lady has been holding private talks over the past year with the National Restaurant Association, a trade group, in a bid to get restaurants to adopt her goals of smaller portions and children’s meals that include offerings healthier than French fries and soda, according to White House and industry officials. Now as you can probably guess I try to ignore Michelle Obama as much as possible. As far as I am concerned, the First Lady should be seen and not heard. I didn’t vote for her and I don’t think she is a “co-president” like Hillary Clinton tried to be. If First Ladies want to work with children or engage in any other charitable works or adopt a cause, that’s fine. But they need to stay away from policy matters. AND they need to stop preaching at us – especially when they are complete hypocrites like Mrs. Obama. She has been on a crusade against obesity, admirable enough. But at every turn she ignores her own platform and indulges in banquets fit for a boatloads of Vikings. Now she is trying to tell restaurants how much they should serve. This after a super spread for the Super Bowl:
For his Super Bowl party Sunday evening, Obama is offering Yuengling Lager and Light, brewed in Pennsylvania, and Hinterland Pale Ale and Amber Ale, all the way from Wisconsin. Independents can pour down some White House Honey Ale if they like.
The rest of the menu for the 100 or so guests at the White House bash is tailgate-friendly even if served inside the Executive Mansion: bratwurst, kielbasa, cheeseburgers, deep-dish pizza and Buffalo wings with sides of German potato salad, twice-baked potatoes and assorted chips and dips. LINK
How much of this can we take? Liberals are on a new crusade to tell us what we can and can’t eat – salt, sugar, soda drinks, calories, you name it the food police under the likes of NYC Mayor Bloomberg are trying to use their government power to limit what we can eat. It’s the nanny state run amok.
For the record, most restaurants already have “healthy choices” on their menus. Children are notoriously finicky as most parents will verify. Most of us do our best trying to put healthy food on the table, some are just happy to put ANY food on the table in this economy. The last thing we need is liberals telling us how bad a job we are doing just because little Johnny is going through a Spaghetti-O phase. They usually outgrow it and those who don’t have bigger issues than food.
As for me – I’m a grown man and I don’t need ANYONE to tell me what I can or can’t do with my body. (Sound familiar?) But that liberal mantra only holds water when you are putting a pair of scissors through the spine of a newborn, though. Well, I say it’s my CHOICE to eat a CHEESESTEAK!
Chicken fingers and fries aren’t going to kill you faster that say President Obama’s SMOKING! Maybe Michelle should focus on getting her own house in order before preaching to the rest of us.
