WEST PHILADELPHIA – January 10, 2011 (WPVI) — Philadelphia fire crews are battling a 4-alarm blaze in a West Philadelphia apartment complex.
Chopper 6 HD is over the scene showing flames shooting from the rooftop of two buildings and smoke billowing into the skies. Multiple crews can be seen dousing the flames with water. The fire broke out inside the Windermere Court Apartments, a four-story apartment complex at 4800 Walnut Street .
Deputy Chief Willy Williams says light smoke was reported in one of the four-story buildings at 2:35 p.m. Monday. He says the response had reached a third alarm about an hour later and a fourth alarm was declared at 4 p.m.
There are no reports of injuries, but officials say the building is being evacuated. 28 people have been evacuated so far. LINK
In the past two weeks there have been at least three EXTRA ALARM fires in Philadelphia. Make that four. As I write this there is a massive, out of control apartment fire once again in West Philadelphia. Take a look at this picture. What I see is chilling: heavy fire through the roof while at the same time heavy fire blowing out of a lower floor window. That means fire has spread throughout this building like Cancer. These firefighters are in for an intense night. Most likely this fire will rage for hours more.
While five alarms worth of equipment are tied up at this fire, there is little left to cover the rest of the city. It is at times like this that we are at our most vulnerable and the insanity of the Nutter administrations public safety policies are exposed. Companies are spread out all over the city trying to maintain coverage. Just say a prayer that another fire doesn’t break out overnight.
