BIG BROTHER IS ALIVE AND WELL IN AMERICA

First, it was smoking in restaurants and bars. Then, artery-clogging trans fat in fast food joints and bakeries. Now, Boston health regulators have their crosshairs fixed on soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages sold in city buildings.

SALT BAD, SUGAR BAD, BECOME A VEGAN, NO MEAT, SMOKE WEED, GOVERNMENT IS THE ANSWER. YES WE CAN. HOPE, CHANGE GOOD. CHANGE, CHANGE, GOOD...

There are precedents: San Francisco’s mayor earlier this year issued an executive order banning sale of sugary drinks, and New York has imposed rules governing the mix of beverages in city vending machines to favor water.

The city has convened influential health, education, and housing leaders to develop a policy that aims to reduce consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. While discussions are ongoing, Bill Walczak, head of a community health center and a member of the city’s panel, said, “Somebody has to take a stand, and if it isn’t the government and health care institutions leading the way to a healthier lifestyle, who’s going to do it?’’

Concerned about the girth of employees and visitors to government agencies, Boston officials are weighing — gingerly — whether to restrict or even prohibit the sale of calorie-laden refreshments on city-owned property. LINK

This is a story where we can see very clearly the difference between the right and the left. On the left we have the nanny state on steroids as represented by the Obama administration. Their policies and world view are trickling down through all levels of government and are getting more oppressive at every turn. Intriguing that while liberals don’t believe in trickle down economics, they SWEAR by trickle down socialism and government control. On the right, adults who just want to be left alone and have the government get out of our everyday life.

This guy Walczak should not be allowed to exert any authority over any aspect of public policy. It is clear that he has an “I know what’s best for you, better than you do” mentality that is totally incompatible with our American concept of personal freedom and responsibility. He is a lunatic and thinks that average grown ups need his enlightened ideas to keep from getting fat. I swear these people are scary. They are perfectly comfortable using the apparatus of government to enforce their ideology on the most mundane aspects of our every day life. From the food we eat, to the cars we drive, to the flags we fly, to the trash in our cans, to our health care, our banking and our education, the liberal agenda of controlling our everyday existence is in overdrive under this administration. Clearly the socialist left feels emboldened under Obama and they are trying to do as much damage as they can, while they can.

I find this aspect especially appalling:

Firefighters declined to comment at a South End firehouse where a hulking blue Pepsi machine offers a dozen options, most containing sugar. Revenue from the machines is used by firefighters to help pay for coffee, utensils, and other dining supplies, said Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald.

Every firehouse has a canteen in it. It’s filled with candy bars, soap, razors, Tylenol, maybe Pepto-Bismol, or any of the myriad of life’s little necessities a firefighter may need while working long hours. One of my fondest memories as a kid was when my dad would take me to the firehouse to pick up his paycheck (in the days before direct deposit) and we would be allowed to get a treat from the canteen, usually at the encouragement of the other firefighters.

Usually we make a few dollars at the end of the month that goes right back into the station to cover any of the dozens of things that city doesn’t pay for but are needed to keep our operation running 24-7-365. We also have an old refrigerator where we sell juice, soda, Gatorade, water (in plastic bottles) and whatever else may happen to be on sale at Sam’s Club this week. Again the money is put right back into the house. Losing even that minor revenue stream would do nothing to solve any obesity issues and only add to the frustration of trying to do more with less.

Let’s face it- if I want a damn Pepsi, I’m going to have one. Period. I’m pretty sure most Americans feel the same way. Funny that liberals want to legalize Marijuana but outlaw Coke… a cola. Raving idiots. What’s even more insipid is that liberals LOVE to roast conservatives for paying too much attention to social issues they deem are none of the government’s business (gay marriage for example) yet are perfectly comfortable using an all-powerful bureaucracy to regulate our sugar or salt intake. If it wasn’t so scary (because they are in charge) it would be hilarious.

I don’t know whether to classify this in the realm of SOYLENT GREEN, 1984, A BRAVE NEW WORLD, THX 1138, or even V FOR VENDETTA…
All I do know is that this sure isn’t the AMERICA I grew up in.
