The debate in Ann Arbor, where firefighters are being laid off due to a multimillion dollar budget deficit, is over an $850,000 piece of art.

That’s how much the city has agreed to pay German artist Herbert Dreiseitl for a three-piece water sculpture that would go in front of the new police and courts building right by the City Hall. The city has the money to do it because in 2007, it agreed to set aside for public art 1 percent of money that went into capital improvement projects that were $100,000 or larger.

Most capital projects involve streets, sewers and water. Ann Arbor City Council member Stephen Kunselman, a Democrat, opposed the art deal. “I think it is incredibly insensitive,” Kunselman said. “It is insensitive to the staff and their morale. It is insensitive to the community. There are people out there struggling financially, and here we are spending a large amount of money on a piece of art.” LINK

I don’t have to tell you how insane this is. My question is what’s it going to take for people to understand that these cuts are going to result in a lot of tragedy for a lot of people. A lot of innocent people. The elderly, the infirm, children. They are the demographics who suffer the most from accidents and fires. Our elected politicians think cutting the fire department will help them out of a budget crisis of their own making. That is just idiocy. The money the city pays out in wages to firefighters in the first place gets pumped directly back into the local economy. Nancy Pelosi said as much while advocating for extending unemployment benefits. What’s more you could find any number of wasteful items like this in Philly’s budget and you wouldn’t even strain your eyes.

Instead of paying firefighters to stay on the job, these maniacs would rather close fire companies and pay others endless unemployment wages for NOT WORKING!!!! These people currently in charge of our country are very, very dangerous. Their vision of what our country should be like is a very sick, twisted place where those who work get shafted, those who don’t get rewarded. Remember in November. I can’t wait!

Someone needs to get their priorities adjusted pretty quickly or is it already too late?

November is not going to get here soon enough.

  2. It may be too late for people having emergencies unfortunately.
