MUSCLE CAR HALL OF FAME: 1968 AMX

1968 AMX

You needed a strong stomach to own anything made by American Motors Corp. back in the day. To say their cars lacked something, like (quality, reliability etc.) is certainly an understatement. That explains why they are no longer in business.

But if you had a 1969 AMX you had the one car AMC ever made that you could admit to owning and not be laughed at. It was a small car with a 390 ci. engine in some cases. You had to be careful if you got into a race with one because you could get burned. I remember exactly ONE in the neighborhood growing up and it was black. Everyone thought it reminded them of Mad Max’s car. They were neat.

    It’s no Pacer.

AND they could run like scalded dogs with a ‘bit’ of work… 🙂 Just sayin…

A friend of mine had one with a 390, 4-speed, and a (about) 3.70 rear end. With just small ‘cheater’ slicks, he ran mid-12’s.
Pretty damn good for a “Rambler”!

    Cap:
Penske even ran those cars in the old grand am circuits in the late 60s-early 70s
    Painted red, white and blue.

    Have a great 4th.
    Stay safe out there.

If I’m not mistaken, they were Javelins, not AMXs.
I saw Mark Donahue race one at Watkins Glen.

I had a ’69 AMX (after three Corvettes). Fabulous car. Much faster and more fun than the Vettes, believe it or not.

  5. “Scalded dogs”. I like that…
