SHOCKA – A GULF HURRICANE!

LOS CABOS, Mexico (AP) – Emergency workers struggled to evacuate thousands of reluctant slum dwellers as extremely dangerous Hurricane Jimena approached Mexico’s resort-studded Baja California Peninsula on Tuesday.

Jimena, just short of Category 5 status with winds of near 155 mph (250 kph), could rake the region of harsh desert fringed with picturesque beaches and fishing villages as a major hurricane by Tuesday evening

Police, firefighters and navy personnel drove through shantytowns, trying to persuade some 10,000 people to evacuate shacks made of plastic sheeting, wood, reeds and even blankets.

“For the safety of you and your family, board a vehicle or head to the nearest shelter,” firefighter Ricardo Villalobos bellowed over a loudspeaker as his fire truck wound its way through the sand streets of Colonia Obrera, a slum built along a stream bed that regularly springs to life when a hurricane hits. In order to pose valid analysis of the Mexican authorities pre- hurricane disaster efforts, I am canceling my day trip with the family to the Jersey Shore and boarding a flight to Baja California. I will be able to see first hand the Police, Firefighters and NAVY in a coordinated effort try to evacuate thousands of people. Should be interesting. According to some, it can’t be done. Hope they have enough licensed truck drivers.

No, according to some, the author should give at least some merit should be given to those that witness/experience it firsthand.

    oops, bad typing.

    Stay safe, Captain.

  4. I gave her plenty of merit. I read and digested he response. There are some things we disagree on but I suspect her lack of familiarity with emergency services colors her opinions. This was one of the worst run disaster operations in history hands down.

I pity anyone who lived through it but at the same time am staggered that they re-elected Nagin.

  5. Thanks Mike, you too.

“I …am staggered that they re-elected Nagin.” – I think the water got into their brains.
